CF Population size

Posted by Matt at 3:49 PM Coldfusion

When you hear of things like "800,000 developers use coldfusion" do you ever think something like "hmmmm, I think there is 7.8million!" or "really?.......".

I once worked out the average number of CF Devs I've come across per company during my career is 8 Devs per company, some companies had 2, some had 25, but when I worked out the average it was 8.

If this was the normal average then I'd say we would have 100,000 employers out there on average advertising a couple of jobs a year, so we'd see around 250,000 job ads a year for coldfusion.

Having lived in both Australia and Europe I would estimate the total number of CF employers on both continents would be less than 1,000 (excluding sole traders).

Maybe there is 89,000 employers in the America's and say 10,000 in Asia.

I do not believe for a minute that 800,000 Coldfusion developers exist.

How many are in the world? I have no idea, but hopefully if everyone passes the below link around we'll get a better understanding.

I just found this link http://bit.ly/CFDevPop

On www.adrocknaphobia.com

As for my stats above, I got the 800,000 from Adobe, who I believe got it from a 3rd party, my estimates on 100,000 employers etc is just to get people thinking.

On average how many CF Devs have you worked with per company? and how many do you estimate exist in the world?

My previous company had about 10 but now days are mostly dotnet and java. A famous medical institution in the midwest at one time had hundreds of CF developers. However the direction is now DotNet. My team currently has 6 full time and 6 contractors CF developers but we are moving to dotnet over the next 3 to 5 years.

Hi Ryan,

Be sure to fill out the survey :)

I know of one organization here in Nashville that has about 25-30, but everywhere I've worked in the last 10 years has only had 1-5 CF guys.

ROTFLOL... what a clown. Talk about grand standing. Seriously there is obviously more than a thousand and obviously you are being extreme to point out your view that 800K was IYO extreme. Perhaps you 'could' be correct. May be many of the CF developers are in America.

Hi John,

Thanks for the clown comment and "grand standing"
My estimates on total number of employers was deliberately very vague, as was the number of advertised jobs I should expect to see if that many employers existed.
250,000 would mean all cf places have an extreme turn over and not factor in that a lot of jobs are never even advertised at all.

But yes I do believe the figure of 800,000 cf developers is way off the actual amount.

care to let us know of your global world wide estimate as well as your US estimate?

One reason that makes me always question "800,000 coldfusion developers" is that Adobe says 12,000 companies are using Coldfusion, 800 / 12 = 66
An avg of 66 cf developers per company using it?, or is there several hundred thousand hobby programmers?

I'd like to know peoples thoughts.

How many people use ColdFusion that are not working for a company? Contractors, personal projects... let's just say all the sites hosted by sites like Hosting.com for instance where they use ColdFusion but the company isn't. Fact finding is always an issue hard to master. Your point might speak well to "gainfully full time employed CF developers". Beyond that you are trying to throw all the eggs in one basket.

Hi John

So what is your estimate?

You will not understand this but my experience has been an increased number of CFJobs showing online and being passed around. My estimate is the market is healthier and there are always people getting tired of the current platform. When frustrated the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. So what people do is start looking to justify why they want to jump on the other side of the fence. It might be a good move for them and it might be a bad move. If you are concerned then you should be making a decision.

My estimate is a healthy market. Note: Years ago I was an Amiga computer var and did not watch the market health and locked myself into a zone of what I see. So with that said my estimate is not founded by research and it will not be shared public. It is pleasing and durable IMO at this time. Hope you find your peace so you don't have to stress out over issues like this.

John,
I have no idea why you mention people being frustrated and wanting to jump ship and grass being greener etc.

I'm happy working as a CF Dev, the whole point of this discussion is do people think that there is 800,000 cf devs in the world.
I'm clearly not stressing over it, I simply helped out by letting everyone know of a survey and stated I didn't believe there is 800k devs and I asked what other peoples estimates were, and you simply got on here calling me a clown and rambling about grandstanding.

No... clowning for grandstanding on the issue. We all clown around now and then. This is a blog. Smile amigo. :) This isn't a trade journal.

I doubt the active developers are that many also. When you joke about 7.8 million that is either clowning or something bad. I was thinking you were just having fun with the figures. Hope your week goes well... and happy CF coding as I will enjoy it also.
